Six Sigma Improves Transport Department Results

In June 2004, the transport department completed a Six Sigma project that reduced patient transport time to an average of 25.3 minutes from an average of 40.59 minutes. Patients are now transported in 29 minutes or less 69.5 percent of the time!

These results were achieved by reconfiguring the transportation software package to direct transporters to the most appropriate patients, defining new location zones to allow the software to make transporter assignments based on need and location and creating a new process that increased patient and nursing awareness of pending transports, which allowed the patients to be ready when the transporter arrived.

Successful Implementation brings Rapid Results

"I would like to acknowledge [you] for an excellent project implementation of our new Teletracking [TransportTracking] system. [Trainer] was very thorough in his training and spent a lot of time with us on improving process issues, to the benefit of the hospital (including both porters and requestors) . The hardware and software is working without a fault and we are quite pleased with your efforts. Thank you."
