“I used to be homeless,” he said.
Mr. Gregorakis, 33, of Aliquippa, arrived at PPG Paints Arena at 5:25 a.m. Friday, joining a crowd of more than 200 people lining up for the event by the time doors opened at 6 a.m. Nearly 1,200 volunteers, including 133 dentists, were preparing to treat the flood of patients in need of oral surgery, root canals, dentures, fillings and cleanings.
Patients with sleeping bags started waiting outside the arena on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. for the opening of the clinic on Friday.
“We got to 510 patients by 9 a.m.,” said Keith Young, the lead volunteer coordinator, explaining that event capacity was reached only three hours after doors had opened.
