Sustaining digital transformation in healthcare requires leadership alignment to unlock patient care improvements and drive operational efficiencies. For over three years, our organizations have worked together to develop a global strategic partnership focused on improving healthcare operations and sharing best practices using TeleTracking’s Operations IQ Platform. The partnership has developed into a friendship as we share insights on challenges, opportunities, and the power of operational data in driving and delivering measurable change for our organizations.

Different Models, Similar Challenges

United States United Kingdom
Model: Mixed system that does not provide universal coverage, where publicly financed government coverage coexists with privately financed market coverage.   Model: National system of healthcare, paid for by citizens through taxes.
Key Challenges: health care cost growth; quality of care; healthcare staffing shortages; optimizing clinical workflows; drug prices; insufficient insurance coverage; need for growth by attracting new/more patients. Key Challenges: lack of resources & funding; need for digitalization; aging population; increase in demand for services; healthcare staffing shortages; outdated building and infrastructure.

While the topic of healthcare digitalization is nothing new, we’ve learned that there is power in nurturing a shared, global perspective. We believe there is a better way for hospitals and health systems to operate globally, and it’s not about adding more money into the system, but about better managing existing resources through shared visibility and communication across the entire healthcare continuum. This can be summarized:

  • Aligned Leadership: Never underestimate the power of an aligned leadership team focused on patient care improvements, staff workflow support, and leveraging data to make informed strategic decisions.
  • Operational Efficiency: Understanding the importance of operational optimization is critical to healthcare digitalization. Complementing the work of the EMR, these purpose-built platforms streamline operations by identifying bottlenecks and optimizing workflows and resource allocation. It acts as the “operating backbone” from forecasting patient admissions, automating staffing workflows, improving capacity management, managing resource utilization, and reducing patient wait times. The ultimate objective is to have a more efficient and effective healthcare system.
  • Data Powered Decision-Making: Data-driven insights are crucial for operational and clinical decision-making. This is a great opportunity to get buy-in across the organization by encouraging teams to identify trends, better load-balance workflows and resources, and have the information needed to drive better care delivery.
  • Understand it’s a Journey: Accept that there will be setbacks with a digital transformation journey. Work with your teams and IT partner on optimization plans that address the bottlenecks thoughtfully and with a clear strategy that involves cross-functional perspectives.
  • Support Your Teams: Celebrate wins across the organization. Recognize teams for their improvements and share successes cross-functionally to drive adoption and reinforce how technology can positively impact patient care, staffing workflows, and quality care outcomes.

The power of an aligned leadership team is crucial to the success of your organization’s healthcare digitalization journey. A comprehensive, purpose-built Operations Platform can unlock measurable efficiency and growth opportunities for health systems globally. In the end, these platforms, combined with the data they generate, are the cornerstone of successful digital transformation.

TeleTracking connected our teams together in a way that allowed us to discover that while our health systems are different, the problems we face are the same. We’ve been able to help each other discover new ways to solve common challenges, while developing a strong international friendship that continues to grow.

Over the course of this global partnership, we’ve come to appreciate the value of operational, digital, and data strategies, helping our health systems realize the enormous potential of operational efficiency and create a path forward for a more efficient, effective, value-based healthcare model.

Over the years of working with Paul and the Carilion Clinic team, we’ve developed a shared understanding and passion for how we can leverage technology to improve patient care. The partnership has continued to challenge the status quo and is testament to the relationship and how gathering like-minded individuals together drives innovation and improvement.
